Hotel Review: Shangri-La Mactan Resort and Spa (Ocean Wing)

December 3, 2016 by Bino Leave a Comment

The Shangri-La Mactan Resort and Spa exemplifies a compelling city getaway. A mere 45 minutes drive from bustling Cebu City, the resort’s white sand beaches and translucent waters can impress even the most jaded traveler. The property has been around for over twenty years and through refurbishments over the years, remains highly popular in the region for those seeking a great beach holiday. It was recently voted by CN Traveler as one of the best resorts in the world! The wonderful thing about this resort is that while it is located in a quieter side of Mactan, those yearning for the city life can easily hop on a cab and head to Cebu so you do get the best of both worlds here.

From Singapore, there are several options to get here including via flights from Tigerair. From Mactan Cebu International Airport, the resort is roughly a 15 minute drive away. For this particular stay, we were billeted at the Ocean Wing which is housed in a separate building from the main wing and has its own lobby. Upon getting dropped off at the Ocean Wing driveway, we were immediately escorted to our sleeping quarters for in-room check-in.

Hairy Crab Menu 2016 at Shang Palace, Shangri-La Singapore

October 29, 2016 by Bino Leave a Comment

It is hairy crab season once again and Shang Palace at Shangri-La Singapore has launched their anticipated hairy crab menu for 2016. Valid from now til 30th November, the restaurant has rolled out a series of dishes which guests may order as a set menu or in ala carte style. I recently dropped by Shang Palace to check out a selection of the hairy crab menu.

While it is not uncommon to have an entire hairy crab during the season, the items I had at Shang Palace featured various interpretations of the prized crab meat sans the shell. I did not have to worry about having my fingers dirty this time.

Raging Bull Chophouse & Bar Launch at Shangri-la at the Fort, Manila

October 2, 2016 by Bino Leave a Comment

Raging Bull Chophouse & Bar officially opened its doors to the public recently through an invite only event.  Before entering the restaurant, you are greeted with a golden embossed logo and the name of the restaurant behind a marbled wall.

As you enter the restaurant, old fashioned elegance is immediately imprinted in your mind.  It mimics those exclusive country clubs seen in movies.  It has different sections, having a cozy and homey section as well as a well-lit bar for a livelier setting.  It is definitely unique and versatile, not too snobbish for casual diners and drinkers but classy enough to attract the fine dining crowd.

The Table by Golden Circle: New Global Restaurant & Bar Loyalty Programme by Shangri-la

September 4, 2016 by Bino Leave a Comment

Shangri-la Hotels & Resorts launches The Table by Golden Circle, a new food and beverage loyalty programme applicable to those who dine across participating Shangri-la properties globally. The membership programme is part of the ongoing revamp of the Golden Circle loyalty programme by Shangri-la. Likewise, The Table is fully integrated with the said loyalty programme and members are recognized through instant redemptions, invitations to special events and exclusive offers.

The glaring benefit is that your dining spends will minimally be equivalent to a 10% rebate if you’re a base member (i.e. Gold) that you can spend at participating restaurants in Shangri-la hotels. This goes up to an equivalent 18.75% rebate if you’re a Diamond member.

Flavours of Singapore Dinner Buffet at The Line in Shangri-La Singapore

August 1, 2016 by Bino Leave a Comment

The Line at Shangri-La Singapore has recently enhanced their dinner buffet offerings in time for Singapore’s 51st National Day. Traditional hawker food takes center stage with items such as Singapore Laksa, Oyster Omelette, Satay and Nasi Lemak as well as creative interpretations of evergreen hawker fare like Chicken Rice Maki Roll and Chili Crab Brioche lining the buffet spread. I distinctly remember dining at The Line exactly a year ago when I sampled the Golden Jubilee buffet which also had a number of unique snippets of Singapore dishes. While the theme last year was based on the culinary team’s vision of the future of Singaporean cuisine, this year’s theme puts a strong emphasis on the past with dishes that have long disappeared from Singapore’s food courts and bakeries.

I was amazed to find The Line almost full despite it being a Tuesday evening. As usual, I started by going to the Japanese section. While it had all the typical sashimi and maki, I was astounded by the Chicken Rice Maki Roll. At first glance it looks like your typical sushi roll but look closely and instead of seaweed, you’ll see chicken skin lining the rice.

Sunday Superbrunch at HEAT in EDSA Shangri-la

June 6, 2016 by Bino Leave a Comment

HEAT in Edsa Shangri-La is the latest hotel all-day dining restaurant to roll out a Sunday buffet brunch in what is increasingly becoming a popular Sunday activity for those living in Metro Manila.

Dubbed as a “Superbrunch,” the buffet combines the best of HEAT’s hugely popular Mad for Lobster Fridays and Mad for Wagyu Saturdays while still maintaining many of the restaurant’s most popular and evergreen dishes. Last week, I was invited by the hotel to check out the brunch complete with Grandi Vini wine pairing.

Time Out Weekend Staycation at Shangri-la Singapore

April 4, 2016 by Bino 3 Comments

Shangri-la Singapore has recently unveiled a tempting staycation package that’s bound to make guests think twice about leaving the comforts of the hotel during their stay. Aptly called the “Time Out Weekend Staycation,” this package for two for a stay at the Garden Wing comes full of extras to differentiate it from the typical staycation. During a recent weekend, I managed to check out firsthand exactly what makes this package special.

shangri-la singapore garden wing

As with my previous stay at Shangri-la Singapore’s Garden Wing, I checked in via dedicated counters located near the entrance to the resort-like building. At the time of my check-in there was just one person manning the desk. As soon as I was seen queuing, a second person came by to check me in so I did not have to wait long.
