Hotel Staycation Review: Shangri-la Hotel Singapore Valley Wing – Most Luxurious Staycation in Singapore

December 13, 2020 by Bino Leave a Comment

The Shangri-la Hotel Singapore can be thought of as the ultimate hotel because of its staggering 792 rooms and 3 varying propositions, from the business-friendly Tower Wing to the resort-like Garden Wing and the exclusive Valley Wing. I have stayed at the Shangri-la Hotel Singapore a couple of times and tend to think of the property as akin to a small community with its myriad of dining options as well as perpetually busy lobby.

Some weeks back, I had the opportunity to have a staycation at the hotel again, this time at the more opulent Valley Wing. Featuring a separate entrance and high-ceiling lobby which is iconic of Shangri-la hotels the world over, Shangri-la Hotel Singapore’s Valley Wing is carefully tucked behind the main portion of the hotel.

Nami – Review of New Japanese Restaurant in Shangri-la Singapore (With Menu)

June 24, 2017 by Bino Leave a Comment

It had been a while since I last made a visit to Shangri-la Singapore. In a span of a few months, the hotel revamped their Tower Wing, refreshed the lobby and is in the midst of launching a few new food concepts. One of them is Nami, the fine dining Japanese restaurant which opened only on the 31st May 2017.

During my latest visit to the luxury hotel, I went to try the delights of Nami. It has received quite a few great reviews since it opened and I was not disappointed when I went to try it out for myself. The food, put simply, was a pleasure from start to finish.

Flavours of Singapore Dinner Buffet at The Line in Shangri-La Singapore

August 1, 2016 by Bino Leave a Comment

The Line at Shangri-La Singapore has recently enhanced their dinner buffet offerings in time for Singapore’s 51st National Day. Traditional hawker food takes center stage with items such as Singapore Laksa, Oyster Omelette, Satay and Nasi Lemak as well as creative interpretations of evergreen hawker fare like Chicken Rice Maki Roll and Chili Crab Brioche lining the buffet spread. I distinctly remember dining at The Line exactly a year ago when I sampled the Golden Jubilee buffet which also had a number of unique snippets of Singapore dishes. While the theme last year was based on the culinary team’s vision of the future of Singaporean cuisine, this year’s theme puts a strong emphasis on the past with dishes that have long disappeared from Singapore’s food courts and bakeries.

I was amazed to find The Line almost full despite it being a Tuesday evening. As usual, I started by going to the Japanese section. While it had all the typical sashimi and maki, I was astounded by the Chicken Rice Maki Roll. At first glance it looks like your typical sushi roll but look closely and instead of seaweed, you’ll see chicken skin lining the rice.

New Dimsum Creations in Shang Palace at Shangri-La Singapore

June 26, 2016 by Bino 1 Comment

Shang Palace, the Chinese restaurant at Shangri-La Singapore has recently unveiled a series of fourteen new items in an enhancement of their dimsum menu. Overseen by Head Dimsum Chef, Li Shou Tao, the new offerings boast of creative ingredients such as lychee, coconut and enoki mushrooms. Recently, I was invited by the hotel to check out highlights from the new menu. Being the dimsum lover that I am, I was eager to find out how these unconventional ingredients were integrated into my favorite dumplings, lotus wraps and spring rolls.

We started with a platter of four types of dumplings – Sakura Shrimp Dumplings, Steamed Seafood and Egg White Dumplings, Steamed Assorted Fungus and Carrot Dumplings and Steamed Scallop Dumplings with Water Chestnut and Chinese Celery. I loved how the dumpling skin was prepared with just the right texture and not too thick. The seafood within – whether scallops or prawn – were generously sized and gave me satisfaction with each bite. The Scallop Dumplings with Water Chestnut and Chinese Celery was particularly interesting due to its added crunch – something quite unexpected for dimsum!

Time Out Weekend Staycation at Shangri-la Singapore

April 4, 2016 by Bino 3 Comments

Shangri-la Singapore has recently unveiled a tempting staycation package that’s bound to make guests think twice about leaving the comforts of the hotel during their stay. Aptly called the “Time Out Weekend Staycation,” this package for two for a stay at the Garden Wing comes full of extras to differentiate it from the typical staycation. During a recent weekend, I managed to check out firsthand exactly what makes this package special.

shangri-la singapore garden wing

As with my previous stay at Shangri-la Singapore’s Garden Wing, I checked in via dedicated counters located near the entrance to the resort-like building. At the time of my check-in there was just one person manning the desk. As soon as I was seen queuing, a second person came by to check me in so I did not have to wait long.

The New Sunday Champagne Brunch at The Line in Shangri-la Singapore

October 24, 2015 by Bino Leave a Comment

One of Singapore’s most established and go-to place for hotel buffets, The Line at Shangri-la Singapore has recently upped the ante by revamping their Sunday champagne brunch offering. I’m amazed at how this place manages to keep itself so popular over the years despite the many competitors that have tried to outpace it in terms of variety, opulence and theme. While The Line can no longer boast of having the most extensive hotel buffet in Singapore, it stays within the minds of diners by offering exciting themes from time to time while maintaining freshness and high quality in the food. I last visited some 2 months back when the restaurant featured creative interpretations of Singapore dishes in the buffet and that was a hit among local diners. Most recently, I was invited to The Line to check out the new food offerings brought in by the recently-appointed chef de cuisine, Vincent Wong.

Regulars at The Line will be pleased to note that old favorites such as the satay counter, wide variety of sushi as well as fresh seafood are still there. But there are many new highlights. Here is a review of what to expect at The Line’s Sunday Champagne Brunch:

The Line at Shangri-la Hotel Singapore: A Futuristic Golden Jubilee Buffet

August 5, 2015 by Bino 2 Comments

It has been a while since I’ve had the pleasure of dining at The Line at Shangri-la Singapore. Called as such due to its elongated 16 theater kitchens, the buffet here has the distinction of being one of the longest in the city state. I returned just last week due to an innovative menu presented for SG50, a futuristic twist to traditional Singapore favorites. This in effect differentiates The Line’s SG50 selection from the rest.

A Peek at Shangri-la Singapore’s Presidential Suite

July 2, 2014 by Bino Leave a Comment

Occupying a spacious 346 square meters, the luxurious Shangri-la Suite (also known as the Presidential Suite) in the Valley Wing of the Shangri-la Singapore Hotel is probably one of the largest hotel rooms one can find in the city state. For over two decades, this has been the preferred 5-star lodging for many heads of state and dignitaries when they visit Singapore and it’s easy to see why. Featuring two bedrooms, its own gym, a personal butler and even its own private entrance, the suite is almost like its own world, away from the conviviality of the three main towers that comprise the Shangri-la Singapore. If you have 10,900 Singapore Dollars (USD 8,720) to spare, this is certainly a luxurious way to spend it!

I had the opportunity to check out the Presidential Suite during my last stay in Shangri-la Singapore. Coming in from the private entrance, I was greeted by a most elegant, marble-floored hallway, the type I would often picture a butler leading me to if I ever get to enter one of those stately palaces of Europe. This made for a nice segue way to the entertainment area, fitted with beautiful walnut timber flooring from the United States and handmade rugs.  This huge room contains the living, drawing and formal dining areas, the type I could easily imagine the presidents of the world sitting in while discussing foreign policy with their advisers. The living area is at once very much refined but at the same time fitted to easily suit the needs of business magnates and world leaders. The seating space here could easily fit more than two dozen people.
